MedSwells Surf Translation: Spanish version
This boards are the result of several hours in the workshop during the beginnings of 2021, I think the effort has been worth all the time I've devoted to collaborate with the project Surf And Clean and Aprende a través del Surfing performed together with Federación Española de Surfing.
The boards (wooden paipos) have been donated for its use and enjoyment in the "Surf And Clean" project, to be used in surf/sea baptism at schools, and, for teaching at surfing schools. The choosing of paipos has been intentional, as paipos are part of the origins of surfing, briefly: Paipos where the first boards used by Polynesian children (Hawaiians) to get in contact with the sea, surfing prone, once this learning stage was achieved, the teaching continued surfing standing up on larger boards called alaias.
There is a feeling that surfing this kind of boards transmits: surfing prone with wooden boards, feels like puts you in place, its a bit accepting that your are part of this environment where you are (the sea), and maybe because of its small floatation, and your position is at water level, the effect of the sea and its currents become evident, and places the surfer as another piece more in this great living being that we call Earth.
From people with more years and experience that mine, as the Tom and Jon Wegener brothers, I have learnt that surfing paipos and alaias requires of certain levels as humility, simplicity, and a lot of patience :-), besides the ecological aspect that are values that other types of surfing do not transmit. Therefore, once explained the "why" of choosing paipos, the reason becomes evident: its just to server as an additional tool for the "Surf And Clean" project to bring closer, educate, and transmit the values that we must take care of this environment, the sea, to which we are so linked (our very existence depends on it) and in which we enjoy so much.
I hope that the choice of the boards is appropriate, and that treated with love, and well cared for the last for enough time, to allow to educate, learn, and, enjoy thereby accomplishing their purpose.
The three paipos that appear in the first photography are (in order from left to right):
- Paipo Seed 30" - MedSwells Surfboards, 2021, small paipo of wooden and cork specially crafted for children.
- Paipo Fish 46" - MedSwells Surfboards, 2017, wooden paipo with fish tail, for ligth weights, multi-purpose board (this has been one of my everyday boards for the las 5 years).
- Paipo Corky 50" - MedSwells Surfboards, 2018, wooden paipo all-terrain, of wood, oak and cork, more oriented for grown ups that like bodyboard.
